What a transparent PNG actually contains
A transparent PNG stores the subject and an alpha channel: information about which pixels are opaque, partly visible or empty. The alpha channel is useful for hair, soft edges and other details that do not fit a hard rectangular crop.
A file ending in .png is not necessarily transparent. A screenshot of a checkerboard contains ordinary checkerboard pixels. Likewise, renaming photo.jpg to photo.png changes the name, not the picture. You need to remove the original background and export the edited result.
Make a transparent PNG in Zebra
- Open the background remover. Go to Remove Background and select the original photo. Use the camera image rather than a screenshot when possible.
- Wait for the cutout. Zebra separates the subject from the background. Review the edges before treating the result as finished.
- Correct the mask if needed. Use the erase and restore brushes to remove a missed patch or bring back a detail that was cut away. Zoom in around hair, handles and thin objects.
- Keep the background transparent. A color, gradient or background image creates a different result. Leave those off when you need only the subject.
- Download the PNG. Use the download control instead of taking a screenshot. Keep this file as the reusable original for future designs.
Free access has usage limits. HD background removal has a limited trial after sign-in; Premium provides a larger HD quota. The editor shows current access and export options. See Premium. Background removal uses cloud processing, so the photo is uploaded for this operation. Read the privacy policy if that matters for the image you want to edit.
Check transparency before you publish
Place the downloaded PNG over two different backgrounds in an editor: a light one and a dark one. Empty areas should reveal both backgrounds, while the subject stays visible. This also exposes light fringes that were hard to notice on the checkerboard.
Check the spaces inside the subject as well as its outer edge. A mug handle, bicycle frame or loose strand of hair can contain small background islands. Repair those on the mask before building a poster or product layout around the cutout.
For another photo edit, you can open the PNG in the crop tool or collage maker. Keep an untouched copy before adding text or combining several pictures. Once a composition is flattened with a background, removing that background again can require another cutout.
Why a transparent PNG looks black or white
There are two different cases. A preview app may display empty pixels on its own black or white canvas; the file can still be transparent. Or an app may actually flatten the image onto a background during export or sharing.
To tell them apart, open the original downloaded file in an editor and place it above a colored background. If the color shows through, the preview was the issue. If a solid rectangle remains, inspect the export settings or go back to the original PNG. Do not run background removal again until you know which file lost transparency.
Sharing as a photo can also trigger resizing or conversion in the receiving app. When the alpha channel matters, send the original as a file or document if that option is available, then inspect the received copy. A screenshot of the preview cannot preserve the alpha channel.
PNG, JPEG or WebP?
| Format | Transparency | Good use |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Supported | Reusable cutouts, logos and overlays |
| JPEG | Not supported | Photos with a finished, solid background |
| WebP | Supported | Web images when the destination accepts WebP |
These format differences are documented in the MDN image format guide. The destination matters: retain PNG for a cutout you will edit again, and create a separate JPEG when a publishing form specifically requires it.
Zebra's image compressor can help prepare an export for a file-size limit. Check the output format before compressing a transparent image. Smaller dimensions or a JPEG conversion are not equivalent to keeping the original cutout.
When you need a white background instead
For a finished product photo, a solid white background may be more useful than transparency. In the background remover, choose white after making the cutout, then check the edge against it. Keep two copies: the transparent PNG for future compositions and the finished white-background image for the current upload.
A white background is an editing choice, not a guarantee that a marketplace will accept the image. Check that site's current requirements for dimensions, framing and permitted edits.
