A detail worth knowing about Glitch: the randomness is seeded, so dragging the slider changes the strength of the corruption, not the pattern. The slices stay where they are while you dial them in — the image doesn't reshuffle on every tick, which makes it possible to actually fine-tune a look.

Dust & Scratches gets the opposite treatment on purpose: a Randomize button re-rolls the scratch placement. Don't like where a scratch landed across a face? One click deals a new pattern at the same intensity.

Which intensity for which job

  • Glitch at 25–40% — "something is slightly wrong" energy. The RGB fringe is visible on edges, slices are rare. Works as a subtle style pass on posters and thumbnails.
  • Glitch at 60–100% — full corruption. Heavy channel smear, stacked slice displacement, obvious scanlines. Album covers, cyberpunk edits, error-core.
  • Dust & Scratches at 30–50% — a believable old scan. A few marks, low opacity. Pairs beautifully with a grain pass from the film grain tool.
  • Dust & Scratches at 70–100% — the projector-damaged look. A second overlay layer kicks in above 65%, so the wear gets denser, not just darker.

Stacking effects

The tool applies one effect at a time, but stacking is a two-pass job: apply the first effect, download, then run the result through again with the second effect. Dust & Scratches over Glitch is the classic "damaged VHS tape" combo; Bloom over Dust & Scratches reads as an old photo shot through a soft-focus lens. And if you want color work in the chain, do it first — run a look from the photo filters tool or a darkening pass before the effect, so the effect sits on top of the final tones.

Effects vs filters vs grain — which tool do you actually want?

These get confused constantly, so here's the honest split:

  • Filters recolor the image — they shift tones, contrast, and color balance but don't add texture or damage. That's the filters tool, with 98 looks.
  • Grain adds fine, even, film-like noise across the whole frame — texture, not damage. That's the grain tool.
  • Effects are structural: glitch physically displaces pixels, scratches draw marks on top, bloom bleeds light. That's this tool.

A finished "aged analog" edit often uses all three, in this order: filter → grain → dust & scratches.

Common questions

How do I add a glitch effect to a photo online for free?

Does it lower the image quality?

Brightening lifts every pixel equally. Bloom is selective: it blurs and lifts the frame Orton-style, then adds a second bright-pass layer where only the highlights survive, get pushed toward white, and bleed into neighboring pixels. Bright areas gain a visible halo; shadows mostly stay put. It reads as glow, not exposure.
Which settings make a photo look like an old VHS frame?
